The Taj Yellow House in North Goa is a sensitive revival of a traditional Goan villa, transformed into a modern resort while safeguarding its architectural soul. Rooted in Goa’s Portuguese heritage — defined by vibrant façades, floral patterns, and intricate tilework — the Yellow House embodies the region’s distinct identity. At its heart lies susegad, the Goan philosophy of leisure, comfort, and connection with nature, which permeates every corner of the design.
Set amid dense foliage, the design reimagines the villa as a hospitality haven with a spa, suites, courtyards, and lush outdoor spaces. A meandering driveway leads guests past the spa into the main porch, opening into a world of reception, dining, bakery, bar, and community areas. The courtyard, centered around an ancient tree, becomes a waiting lounge and a social hub — symbolizing endurance and continuity between past and present.

The project fosters social sustainability, encouraging community interactions while maintaining cultural heritage. New wings extend the villa — spa to the east, contemporary suites to the west — while landscaped courtyards and meandering pathways weave together indoor and outdoor life. Dining spaces flow seamlessly from intimate alfresco corners to expansive pool decks, framed by lush greenery.

Minimal structural intervention ensures continuity. Refurbished bedrooms, a trussed bar roof highlighted in lush green, and restored arches and windows carry history forward. Handmade terrazzo and bespoke furnishings merge artisanal craft with luxury. A central water feature enlivens circulation, visually connecting floors and animating movement.

Local craftsmanship defines the interiors: rattan cladding, bespoke furniture, terrazzo tiles, and brass-finished lamps. Colour palettes draw from tropical vibrancy — sunny yellows, tranquil blues, deep greens — creating atmospheres of intimacy and delight. Artworks evoke Goan architectural scenes, while Udaipur stone, heirloom mirrors, and mirrored dining walls enhance richness and depth. Jaali-patterned corridors introduce a poetic play of shadow and light, embedding cultural nuance into everyday experience.

By conserving trees, reusing local materials, and reviving original details, the Yellow House demonstrates heritage sustainability. The villa’s revival fosters cultural identity, boosts local craft, and anchors hospitality in ecological responsibility. What began as a boutique hotel evolved into an affiliate of the Taj Group, offering guests a serene retreat where heritage and modernity coexist harmoniously.
