A vineyard retreat shaped as a slow ascent from the land to a 360-degree horizon of wine country

Conceived for Fratelli Vineyards at Garwad, the project imagines wine tourism not as a single destination building, but as a carefully sequenced landscape of arrival, tasting, retreat, and spectacle. The brief calls for a catalogue of experiences—gourmet dining, wine tasting, spa and sauna facilities, mineral and wine baths, event spaces, sculpture park, gardens, and sound-and-light shows—set within a site defined by uninterrupted vineyard views, distant hills, and scattered water bodies. Rather than importing an alien resort language, the proposal draws its character from this larger terrain, shaping hospitality as an extension of the vineyard itself.

The masterplan is organised with unusual clarity. Public functions are concentrated in the main building close to the principal approach, while the residential component unfolds as a more private field of villas oriented towards the vineyards and internal gardens. Phase 1 accommodates 40 villas, with later phases extending the key count to 70. A banquet hall with spill-out lawns sits apart from the resort rooms, allowing events to remain active without disturbing the quieter rhythm of the retreat. The architecture of the main building is described in the presentation as a “floating disk”, a form that rises from the landform with minimal intervention, folds between indoors and outdoors, and culminates in a 360-degree viewing deck overlooking the estate.

This formal restraint is matched by a strong environmental agenda. The design targets a 5–7°C reduction in perceptible temperature through passive means, a 50 percent improvement over hospitality energy benchmarks, and net-zero ambitions across energy, water, and waste. With thermal comfort achievable through passive strategies for much of the year, and rainwater potential calculated to exceed annual demand, the project locates luxury not in excess, but in climate, landform, and the cultivated pleasure of lingering.
