Bengaluru
A transit hub hotel that blends contemporary comfort with the region’s artistic and architectural heritage
Taj Bangalore reimagines the airport hotel as a place of cultural immersion and calm within one of India’s busiest transit environments. Located near Terminal 1 at Kempegowda International Airport, the extension responds to Bengaluru’s growing stature as a global hub for technology and innovation. Developed with Bengaluru International Airport Limited, it adds 220 guest rooms, including standard doubles and premium corner suites. These rooms are oriented for privacy and expansive runway views, building on the luxury established in the first phase while expanding hospitality options for both business and leisure travellers.
The architecture draws from the region’s heritage. A C shaped configuration recalls traditional courtyards and open spaces, with two wings framing landscape views and drawing daylight into the interiors. The connection between the two phases is choreographed through a ground level corridor that aligns the lobbies along a single spatial axis, and a third level bridge that links the wings and adds sculptural character to the façade.
The extension introduces an all day dining venue and a connecting passage envisioned as a gallery walkway displaying art and craft from across India, with a focus on local artisans. At its center is a five level atrium that brings in natural light from a skylit roof. A sculptural installation inspired by the banyan tree, a symbol of Bengaluru’s Garden City identity, forms the focal point. Landscaped sunken courts at ground level create quiet spaces for reflection, and a semi open restaurant on the fifth floor offers panoramic runway views in a pavilion like setting.
The interiors draw from the city’s legacy of colonial era architecture and its transformation into public cultural spaces. Warm tones with accents of green and blue reference the natural landscapes of the region. Serpeggiante marble, wood, and greenery create a timeless palette, while custom carpets, wall panels, furniture, and lighting incorporate motifs inspired by local craftsmanship and handwoven textiles.
The façade uses locally sourced Sadarhalli granite paired with glass to create a balanced composition of solidity and transparency. Material choices and building form support natural ventilation and self shading, reducing energy use while maintaining comfort. Taj Bangalore establishes a new benchmark for airport hospitality in India. It combines travel efficiency with a strong sense of place and celebrates the cultural and architectural traditions of Bengaluru.
