Kasauli
The Woodside is an exclusive high-end residential development set in the serene hills near Kasauli, a town well-connected by road to Chandigarh and New Delhi. Designed across a steeply contoured site with natural level differences of nearly 100 meters, the project is envisioned as a harmonious insertion into a vast green, mountainous landscape historically used for agriculture and vegetation. Comprising 37 cottages of four distinct types, along with a network of shared facilities, the development unfolds along the existing slopes, embracing both the natural topography and panoramic vistas of the Shimla valley.
The master plan was guided by the principle of minimum intervention: cottages and circulation routes are strategically located to reduce cutting and filling of terrain while preserving existing vegetation and contours. This results in a layered site organization, where cottages cascade down the slopes with a calibrated height difference between rooflines and ground levels, ensuring that every residence enjoys unobstructed views of the surrounding hills, with the largest homes positioned for the farthest horizons.
Environmental stewardship is embedded in the design. Rainwater harvesting pits punctuate the site to capture surface runoff, with water reused for irrigation and stored for further use downhill. Thick 350 mm walls provide thermal mass, moderating interiors to remain cool during the day and warm at night, thereby reducing dependency on artificial cooling and significantly cutting energy consumption.
Special features enhance the exclusivity of the community: a pavilion at the site’s highest point serves as a gathering and viewing space, while a dedicated deck amplifies visual connections to the valley. An existing water body has been preserved, alongside careful conservation of native vegetation, ensuring the ecological character of the site remains intact. Local materials such as stone, timber, slate, and rubble are employed throughout, grounding the architecture in its immediate context and supporting regional craftsmanship.
The Woodside demonstrates a model for sensitive development in fragile mountain terrains, balancing luxury with sustainability, exclusivity with community, and architectural form with environmental logic.
