Kerala
Located within the ecologically sensitive backwaters of Kerala, the Kumarakom Resort is set on a distinctive prawn-farm landscape defined by alternating five-metre-wide bands of land and water, portions of which lie below sea level and are prone to seasonal flooding. Conceived as a luxury eco-tourism retreat, the project demanded a design approach deeply attuned to these fragile environmental conditions. Guided by the principle of “touching the earth lightly,” the masterplan retains the site’s existing land–water striations, minimising ground disturbance and allowing the natural hydrology to remain the primary organiser of movement and experience.
Rather than reshaping the terrain, all built structures are elevated on stilts to negotiate fluctuating water levels and protect the delicate backwater ecology. Waterways function as the principal circulation system, navigated by boats, while pedestrian and vehicular routes are carefully layered to balance operational efficiency with the privacy expected of a resort environment. A parametric planning process was employed to determine the optimal placement of villas and shared facilities, analysing movement nodes, service routes, shortest paths and privacy buffers. This generated an interwoven network of canals, walkways and access roads that supports a highly serviced hospitality programme while preserving seclusion and ecological continuity.
Architecturally, the resort draws from Kerala’s vernacular traditions to embed the project within its cultural landscape. The nalukettu typology informs the spatial organisation of the villas, with inward-looking courtyards and deep sloping roofs providing shade and protection from monsoon rains. To address the region’s high humidity, roof forms inspired by the kettuvallam houseboat employ hyperbolic paraboloid geometry to enhance wind movement through the Venturi effect, improving natural ventilation and thermal comfort. Elevated structures, shaded transitional spaces and water-lined edges reinforce a seamless indoor–outdoor experience, resulting in a resort that is environmentally sensitive, culturally rooted and deeply immersive.
