A UNESCO Happy School

Designed to preserve 700 trees and embed sustainability as an everyday teaching tool

Vidyashilp Academy in Yelahanka is conceived as a next-generation educational campus that integrates learning, nature, and sustainability. Set within a 17-acre teak plantation, the school retains over 700 mature trees, embedding ecological history into its very foundation. The masterplan emphasizes porosity and openness, using a central green spine of existing teak as an intuitive wayfinding device and social anchor. North–south oriented classroom blocks ensure optimal daylight, while east–west courtyards channel prevailing winds to create naturally ventilated, shaded gathering spaces.

The design rethinks conventional school architecture by extending learning beyond classrooms. Central courtyards, shaded amphitheatres, outdoor classrooms, and play zones blur the boundaries between built and unbuilt, encouraging practical, collaborative, and interactive modes of education. Spaces are adaptable, allowing for small group activities, large assemblies, and informal exchanges, while the campus itself becomes a demonstrative landscape of sustainability — with rain gardens, traditional water filtration systems, vermicomposting, and native planting as living classrooms.

In response to contemporary needs, the project embeds resilience and adaptability into its design. Post-pandemic strategies include reduced classroom capacities, cross-ventilated courtyards, and outdoor learning environments, ensuring health and safety without compromising educational quality. By dedicating over eight acres to shaded greens and outdoor sports facilities, the school foregrounds holistic development as much as academic excellence.

Materiality and interiors reflect a balance between minimalism and vibrancy. Neutral, nature-inspired palettes are paired with accent colors for identity and warmth, while facades use patterned jaalis and colored portals to provide shading, orientation, and a distinctive architectural character. From its 450-seat auditorium and libraries to its aquatics complex and extensive sports courts, the campus functions as a holistic ecosystem for 21st-century learning.

Vidyashilp Academy demonstrates how institutional architecture can foster both community and ecology. It is a model for sustainable, liveable education campuses — one where children grow up not just surrounded by knowledge, but by nature, resilience, and imagination.
